Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of large breasts while reshaping the breasts for a more youthful appearance. Dr. Howrigan commonly provides breast reduction for patients who feel discomfort related to their large breast size.
Those who can benefit from breast reduction in Boston include women with:
Women with large breasts often experience a variety of problems due to carrying excess weight on the chest. Pain, shoulder grooves from bra straps and even skeletal deformities are associated with macromastia. If you are experiencing any of these conditions, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery.
The surgery requires about 2-4 hours under general anesthesia. Dr. Howrigan makes an incision shaped like an inverted T, which traces part of the areola and then extends down to the breast crease. Fat, skin and glandular tissue are removed using liposuction and surgical excision. In many cases, the nipples and breasts are both elevated to provide a more youthful appearance. The circumference of the areola may be reduced as well.

Your recovery time will be approximately 1-2 weeks after breast reduction. Dr. Howrigan will give you special instructions to closely follow as you recuperate. A special supportive bra will need to be worn for a few weeks, day and night.
In many cases, there are surgical drains in place to collect fluid after surgery. These are often removed the next day, before you leave the hospital. You will likely experience some aching, swelling, changes in skin sensation and bruising after surgery. To manage discomfort, Dr. Howrigan may prescribe pain medication.
