Liposuction Boston

Liposuction in Boston is performed to slim down specific areas of the body. It’s not a weight loss solution, but it can reshape and contour body areas that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction surgery is versatile; plastic surgeons can use it to reshape almost any area of the body and frequently use it during other procedures such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, arm lift and neck contouring.

How to Determine if Liposuction in Boston is Right for You

A consultation with a Boston plastic surgeon is the first step. During an appointment with Dr. Howrigan, she will examine the areas of concern for possible treatment with liposuction in Boston. Good candidates will typically present conditions such as the following:

  • Persistent areas of fat
  • Stable body weight
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Realistic expectations about liposuction

If you've had little or no success slimming down through diet and exercise, liposuction procedure may be an option to consider. Plastic surgeons use liposuction surgery to treat the abdomen, back, flanks, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, chest and elsewhere.

What to Expect During Liposuction Surgery in Boston

A typical liposuction procedure takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Depending on your surgeon’s preference and the extent of the procedure, it can be done in an office, surgery center or hospital.

For localized procedures targeting a small area of body fat, Dr. Howrigan may utilize local anesthesia. For large volume fat removal, general anesthesia is necessary. Small incisions are made near the targeted area. The doctor then saturates the fatty tissue with tumescent fluid, which makes the fat firmer and therefore easier to remove. Tumescent solution also contains anesthetic for enhanced comfort.

With a thin, hollow, suction-powered tube, Dr. Howrigan dislodges the fat from the surrounding tissue and vacuums it out of the body. To restore fluids that are lost during surgery, intravenous fluids may be administered.

After Liposuction Surgery: Post-Operative Steps

To promote skin contraction and control swelling, an elastic compression garment is used that must be worn as instructed.

You will probably be advised to walk around shortly after the surgery, during which time you will have pain medications to help control discomfort. During recovery from liposuction, it is common to experience numbness, swelling, bruising and uncomfortable sensations on the skin.
